Overview: Get 2,200+ people from the community to come out on a Saturday night for a massive grass-roots event in one of the coolest downtown parks in the country to spell “Google” by spinning blue, red, yellow, and green glowsticks overhead while photographers and videographers shoot the whole scene from a helicopter. Piece of cake. The problems: Only 13 days to pull it off. No money. No city permits. Oh, and no helicopter.
Outcome: Even though another flatter, less rocky city ended up with Google Fiber, everybody involved had a blast and forged new life-long friendships. We can all be proud knowing that—against all odds—a disparate, diverse group of people from our community came together in a singular moment of beauty and cohesion that made Greenville shine on a national stage. Plus we know where to get helicopters now. Mission accomplished.
